John Pointon
John was born in Sydney in 1936 and educated at Trinity Grammar School.
After leaving school at seventeen, he studied art at the National Art School in Sydney. Not believing that he could earn a living from his art, he commenced a career in advertising. While he thoroughly enjoyed his job, painting remained his passion and consumed his weekends.
It was through a friend, Jim Buckley, the then owner of the Newcastle Hotel in George Street, Sydney, that John gained the necessary encouragement to abandon advertising. Jim displayed John's works in the Hotel where they quickly sold.
John became a full-time professional artist in 1969 as a traditional painter in watercolour, pastel and oils. The latter being his preferred medium and the palette knife his favourite method of application. He has mastered the use of light, colour and texture to add another dimension to his paintings.
From 1971, John has had many very successful solo exhibitions all around Australia. He is also a teacher of drawing and was appointed Judge for the Nerang Festival of Arts in Queensland in 1986.
John has been featured in a number of publications and has had limited edition prints made of some of his works.
He now lives in South East Queensland.
