Ross Tamlin
Ross Tamlin (1958 - ) was born and educated in New Zealand. After gaining his New Zealand Certificate of Town Planning he emigrated to Australia in 1982.
With the determination to become a full time artist he extended his natural painting talent by gaining a Fine Arts Certificate (Meadowbank TAFE) and Graphic Arts (Brisbane). During this formative art period Tamlin supported his art practice working as a laboratory paint colour chemist (88-97). All of these disciplines, skills and knowledge come into play with the unexpected and the surreal woven into his carefully crafted paintings. The subject matter varies through from the quirky to dry humour. The viewer is drawn in to unravel the complexity of the finished work. For the most part, the works feature multiple paint layers which are meticulously burnished to achieve a rich patina.
Since 1987 he has been entering art competitions and exhibiting his work in galleries in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and with Paintbox Fine Art in Canberra and London. In 1998 he spent six months in the United Kingdom and on his return to Australia he set up a studio at 1+2 Artist Studios in Rozelle, devoting more time to his art, and participating in a number of group exhibitions.
In 2002 his work was selected to hang in ‘Australia, The Awakening' exhibition at the Australian High Commission in London. More recently (2006) he was a selected finalist in the $150,000 Signature of Sydney art prize. His entry, conceded by a number of fellow artists to be the true ‘painting' winner over the selected (controversial) winner which had been produced using computer generated Photoshop images imposed onto the canvas.
